Freedom to Choose

Infographic Example It is human nature to want to work harder on work that is chosen rather than required. Believing that choice around project topics seems to help students take more ownership of their learning, I try to create assignments that allow for that. The project linked above allows for choice within the parameters of our curriculum & learning objectives. Students can choose an overall topic to create an info-graphic for, and within that topic they select data to include with an eye towards being able to justify their choices. The final product is presented and students are expected to be able to expound upon the data shown in terms of stating what it reveals about how people live and go about their lives in their chosen country or countries, and explain what is revealed about levels of development. Other choices in our class happen within the context of our service learning work. The issue compass is just one tool to help gauge student interest in issues. Service
